“Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it." Habakuk 2:2
I will never forget the day that Kent and I were teaching a leadership course to a room full of incarcerated men. During the course of the training, I asked this question, "If I deposited $86,400 into your bank account tomorrow morning but you had to spend it ALL within 24 hours, how would you spend it?"
What would you buy? Would you be strategic about your spending? They were so excited and quick to tell us what they would buy, (a car, a house, things for my wife and kids, I'd buy a ticket to travel the world, invest, etc.) many of them quickly shouted out. We all had fun sharing ideas and just dreaming of this life changing opportunity.
And then I shared with them, that time is like money. We all have 86,400 seconds to spend every day, and at the end of the day, those seconds are gone...forever! What an en-lighting moment this was as the students pondered this new perspective. They began to entertain a new thought of the importance of time and how we spend it. They began to gain a new understanding of how to become intentional about our stewardship of our life and time.
"Does this thought stress you or inspire you" I asked? "Can you see the seconds just slipping away or can you see yourself maximizing each one of them?" Well, if we are not living your life with intention, the seconds will slip away. You can't hold on to them, you can't save them, but you can learn to use them wisely. It's a simple awareness but when put into action it has the power to change everything!
But perhaps you can change how you look at your life when you see it in seconds. Think about having this account with a limited time deposit every day. Does it make you think of living differently? Are you thinking about moving your life forward or are you stuck in a place you don't want to be? You can’t live in the future; you can’t live in the past, but you can live in the present. Using the seconds available to you RIGHT NOW!
It only takes a very small shift in your perspective. I asked, "What if you stop thinking about just Doing your time, and you shift your thinking into Investing your time?" Maximizing every second to change, grow and be your best self. What if you started designing a plan that included a vision for your future? What if you started developing a strategic, intentional plan for finding purpose in every moment,,,,even if it's behind prison bars?
So I illustrated this technique by showing them my daily journal. I shared with them how I write down my goals, vision, dreams, affirmations and intentions each day. As I opened my journal, of course all written in "pink ink" I shared how I choose to live that day to the fullest by intentionally maximizing my time. I accomplish this by writing, reading and focusing on living a productive joy filled life with intention.
I challenged the class to start this practice in their life. Their first challenge was to start each day by writing down 100 dreams and goals that they would like to achieve in their lifetime. I shared that by writing these things down on paper that it started a process of shaking loose the dreams that may have been laying dormant in their lives.
Silence filled the room and you could tangibly feel the hesitation. Then a young man spoke up and said..."Well, I would do it if I had a "Pink Pen" like you! And they all began to laugh.
Much to his surprise, I tossed the pen across the room to this young man and I said, "Well here's your pink pen now go make it happen!" He had a shocked look on his face as he reached up and caught it and he left class that day with my pink pen in his hand.
The next week we returned to the prison and I heard someone shouting my name when Kent and I walked behind the gate. It was this young man, and he came running toward me with excitement on his face. He said, "Priscilla, Priscilla..... this pen has changed my life!"
He said, "look" and he opened his notebook and the pages were filled! On the pages were his 100 dreams written in "pink!" He said, "I went back to my house (prison cell) and I sat the pen on my notebook with no intention of ever writing my dreams. But as I lay down, I kept looking at the pen and I kept hearing your voice telling me, "go make it happen!"
I finally picked up the pen and I began writing. For the first time in a long time, I felt alive on the inside. I began writing so fast and I began writing things that I haven't thought of in years." It was all because of this "pink pen!"
I will never forget this day. It was a great reminder how God can re-write a life and show us His plan in an instant. That day not only was this young man's life changed, but ours was also. God had used a simple "pink pen" to help this man begin a new journey of rewriting the direction of his life. He used this simple "pink pen" to inspire and reactivate those things in his life that had been laying dormant and untapped. That "pink pen" unlocked potential and purpose and brought inspiration and transformation to a life that God needed to use for His glory!
God knew exactly what He was doing because this young man has a wife and children and just recently got released from prison and returned home to his family after serving a lengthy sentence. He reached out to us and shared this testimony. I know that you will be blessed to hear how his life was changed.......
I finally made it home, and I wanted to tell you about the impact that you and Kent had in my life. My life will never be the same because of the exposure to the principles that you and Kent so effortlessly instilled in all of us at the unit. I truly don't limit my thinking anymore, and have a new found confidence. I know that the season that I got to spend with you and Kent was the spark I needed to changed my WHOLE outlook on personal growth and how important it is. How my mind is the determining factor concerning my success, and my life in general. Thank you both from the bottom of my heart. May you both be blessed and God bless everything you put your hands to.
We all have a story. However, it is life changing stories like these that keep us inspired to do what we do! We are so blessed to see lives impacted, transformed and set on a new course leading to a positive, successful, productive life.
This wouldn't be possible without them knowing how much they are loved and valued and an important part of the family of Jesus Christ. It is through the power of partnership and others joining together with us for a common cause that helps us fulfill the mandate on our lives to help unlock potential in those who are bound. Our greatest blessing has truly been on the other side of our obedience to say Yes! Through KPM we are teaching, training and transforming lives!
When you lose yourself in the service of a greater cause you find the greatness within you!
